All organisms - including humans and bacteria - coat their cell surfaces with complex carbohydrate structures that mediate important interactions with the immediate environment. My PhD research in the lab of Dr. Chris Whitfield (University of Guelph) concentrated on the molecular mechanisms of bacterial glycan transport through the cell envelope. My current research in the Surette lab focuses on how members of the intestinal microbiome degrade host-derived glycans and what this could mean for human health.
